NAME: Monkey D. Luffy. (First name is Luffy.)
AGE: 18-19 years old.
SUITABILITY: N/A.
CANON: One Piece Live Action.
CANON POINT: End of Season 1, after setting out to the Grand Line with his crew.
ABILITIES: Gum Gum Fruit Abilities. After eating the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit, Luffy's body took on the properties of rubber. When someone eats a devil fruit it is said the ocean turns its back on the eater, which means not only does Luffy have rubber properties, but is weak to salt sea water; it renders him weak and should he fall into the ocean he would simply sink to the bottom and be unable to move. If he is sprayed with seawater it will also weaken him temporarily. Luffy uses his rubber abilities to put more impact into his attacks which he calls out in the belief that all good fighters call out their attack names:
• Gum Gum Pistol: A stretched out long range punch.
• Gum Gum Whip: A stretched out long range kick.
• Gum Gum Bazooka: A stretched out two handed slap/shove.
• Gum Gum Gattling: A flurry of punches
• Gum Gum Battle Axe: Stretched out heel kick.
• Gum Gum Rocket: Catapulting himself at the enemy.
Luffy has also been seen to bounce bullets back at pirates or deflect attacks such as when Alvida fought him, inflate his body like a balloon to bounce back cannonballs and has a haphazard style of dodging attacks and fighting. There is no current limit shown as to how far Luffy can be stretched; at one point he was being stretched on a rack by Buggy the clown and showed little signs of concern or discomfort.
Also it's worth an honorary mention that Luffy’s sense of smell is quite impressive. If he smells food he’s able to follow his nose to determine the location of it with success and can seemingly identify individual ingredients.
VICES:
•
Impulsive.
Luffy very rarely thinks things through long enough to develop a plan. He's impulsive and the first to jump into action when something happens. Such impulsivity is urged on by his overconfidence as due to gum-gum abilities, it's been rare that Luffy actually loses a fight. Going in and punching the bad guy is as good a plan as it'll be. Sure, there has been the occasional time where a small plan has been made, but more often than not the pirate captain is the first to go charging in and the last to leave. His impulsivity isn't restricted to action either; Luffy will say what he thinks without considering it, blurting words out and getting himself into trouble more often than not. A perfect example of this would be when Buggy has Luffy in a chokehold over the mention of his nose and the young man's reaction is to still question it whilst reaching up to touch it despite the fact said clown was murderous just over the word
nose.
Being impulsive means a lot of Luffy's decisions are made on the spot with little consideration. When meeting Koby, he only just realises he needs a map after the other says as much and after hearing what Koby's dream is, Luffy simply decides they're going to a marine base. He'll walk in and grab a map, dropping Koby off in the meantime. He sees Zoro an amazing fighter? Luffy doesn't even think twice about offering a spot on his crew and the same goes for Nami as well. There's no need to get to know them too much, Luffy's made the snap decision in his head and he's going with it no matter what. The only things that seem to hold a fixed spot in Luffy's mind are finding the One Piece in the Grand Line and to be a better pirate captain and crew than Shanks and his crew are. Everything else is up in the air.
•
Overconfidence. In Luffy's mind he has the best crew, the best friends, and with that in mind nothing can get in their way. There is little reason for contingency or backup plans because the ones they do have will work because they made them. Such overconfidence is again, really detrimental at times as it takes away Luffy's ability to consider all options from all angles. They will win because they are good pirates, they will get a huge meal for free because the owner of the Baratie will completely understand that Luffy will have a treasure tab and will come back to pay the bill at an undetermined point in the future. Another example would be that during their trip to Syrup village, Luffy vetoes the idea of stealing a ship in the belief that once hearing their plight, they'll receive a ship for free. Luffy's confidence obliterates a lot of common sense or hesitation and unfortunately goes hand in hand with his impulsiveness too. His confidence is such that Luffy believed that in Syrup village he would be given a ship for free, no questions asked. Even though the plan ultimately works, it still removed the option to explore other avenues of procuring a vessel, ones that could involve less killer butlers, poison soup and black cat pirates.
One of the main points in the show when Luffy's confidence is too much is when Zoro challenges Mihawk to a duel. Mihawk is a Warlord, considered the most powerful swordsman and Luffy doesn't talk Zoro out of it or entertain the notion that his friend could lose. Luffy allows it to go ahead and watches as Zoro is thrashed to within an inch of his life. It's most likely the first time ever that Luffy has even had his confidence shaken a little, but rather than being held truly accountable, things continue on as normal once Zoro wakes up. Doing such a thing could have cost Zoro his life had Mihawk not decided to spare him at the last minute.
•
Gluttony. One thing that makes Luffy stand out from others is his absolute gluttony for food. As a pirate he should be more greedy in terms of treasures and gains, but ultimately food and eating to excess overtake these. Treasure would be good, but the One Piece is the only one on Luffy's mind and as such greed takes a back seat to gluttony. Luffy will eat anything and everything until he can physically take no more. He is food motivated for better or for worse, to the point of leading the ship out of a mist patch straight to a floating restaurant by smelling the food cooking in the air. In scenes where Luffy is in a kitchen talking with others he can even be seen putting food in his pockets for later, is often caught outside of his room looking for something to eat and has even knocked himself out for a period of time by ingesting an entire pan of soup that was poisoned. Even his abilities were caused by eating a devil fruit that he shouldn't have had his hands on. He believes that food also feeds the brain so any planning sessions should come with a meal or three.
Luffy is distracted by food and never thinks to check on what he's eating, meaning that at times it's a detriment to any thought out plans or ideas that require no variances or swerving off course. One such time would be during the arc of Syrup Village where his own gluttony led to him drinking an entire pan of blue soup without wondering why it was blue. Said soup was in fact poisoned which resulted in the pirate being out of action for the majority of time things were going down. As to why Luffy is so enamoured by food isn't explored in the setting, but could be put down to a multitude of reasons, some of which being raised as an urchin in Windmill Village or the fact that being made of rubber means he can not only eat copious amounts, but burns more calories than the average person. Whatever the reasoning is, so far in the show his obsession with food has been shown to be more harmful than good in the long run.
VIRTUES:
•
Loyalty. Luffy's loyalty to his friends and crew are admirable. They are practically his family and he will overturn the world in order to keep them safe and away from harm. He will risk his life to return even the smallest of favours because that in his mind is what makes a good pirate. At no point in the show is he shown doubting his friends and his crew, even when Nami leaves with Arlong Luffy simply refuses to believe that Nami could leave the crew, and instead travels to Coco Village to help Nami out. There was not a dubious thought in his head about it and even utilised Buggy the clown when it came to navigating. Luffy even goes as far to say that anyone can harm and abuse him, but the moment they touch his friends then all bets are off. Luffy has taken down Kuro of the Black Cat pirates to help Kaya, he's walked into a marine-based town to take his friend Koby there to follow his dream, and he's brought down Arlong Park in order to help save Coco Village and Nami. Nothing is too much for Luffy and those he considers his friends, no feat too big or promise that can't be made. He will help his crew achieve their dreams no matter what and in his mind there's nothing more important than that.
One example of his loyalty and how long it lasts is Shanks. Shanks was a pirate captain in Luffy's childhood, a mentor and all around good guy. Luffy would constantly ask to be on Shanks crew and would be turned down every time. After the events of eating the devil fruit and needing to be rescued by Shanks, Luffy makes the promise he'll not only be a good pirate captain that will find the One Piece, but that he and his crew will be better than Shanks. It's something that Luffy keeps close to his heart over the years and even now after ten years of not seeing the guy, Luffy will hear no bad spoken about Shanks.
•
Optimism. Luffy's optimism knows no bounds and it would take something catastrophic to have the pirate captain down about something. He's always smiling, cheering on his crew, whooping and hollering and just generally cheering about life. Everything is exciting and an adventure and there is nothing in the world that is too difficult. Somehow Luffy has landed on his feet on more than one occasion and that in turn just bolsters the enthusiasm and optimism about life in general. He loves his crew, his friends and even believes a little in the more dubious ones. There's nothing better than being out on the ocean with the breeze in his hair, his friends around him and a grand adventure to be had. Luffy even believes he'll be the one to find the One Piece, despite not a single pirate having (allegedly) found it in the last twenty years. A new island or place? Obviously it's time to explore, nothing bad could happen surely...
He isn't one for thinking about the worst in things or even having regrets. Luffy has outright stated he doesn't look back and regret things, and he often continues to move forwards on to the next thing without mulling it over or moping should things go awry. Zoro is injured and in a coma? Not anymore, time for the hugs, the back claps, the cheering. Nami has gone off with Arlong? No, there's obviously something else at work there so naturally they're going to go find her. There is no room in Luffy's mind for doubts or major concerns, even when the vice-admiral of the marines is chasing him across the ocean there's no hesitation and when said vice-admiral is revealed to be his grandfather, Luffy reacts like it's no big deal. The only time said optimism has been rattled is Zoro's injury, where Luffy is shown to space out or to ramble about inconsequential things, but it doesn't last long and Luffy is back to his optimistic self in no time.
•
Visionary. As someone who is positive and hopeful, Luffy's ability to envision the future and run towards it is incredible. He sees what they need and simply goes for it, taking out any obstacles that get in the way. Sure, there's no planning that goes between the decision and the end goal, but the pirate captain still manages it with the assistance of his crew. He believes in dreams; his own and for others. When Koby mentions wanting to be a marine, Luffy doesn't laugh or scoff but simply agrees and goes out of the way to help with that. Luffy shares his vision of obtaining the One Piece and in being the best pirate crew, and in return he holds the dreams of the others too. Map of the world, the all Blue, best swordsman and a brave warrior of the sea? No problem, they will attain those dreams no matter what.
Luffy is also able to encourage others in their dreams and expectations without demanding anything in return. He's driven to achieve his goal and can easily see a future in which they all manage it. Despite the fact that Luffy isn't the smartest person, he set out to get the One Piece on a small row boat on his own and now has an amazing crew and a ship of his own, not to mention the highest bounty in the East Blue on his head. Luffy is, somehow, able to achieve what he sets out to do in his own haphazard way.
SURVEY
▶ I REGULARLY MAKE NEW FRIENDS.
▷ 1. Luffy can make friends with most people and with relative ease. Within moments of meeting Koby he considers the other a friend and manages to have that reciprocated. He also manages to make friends with his crew as he meets them and those around them too, cutting a charismatic character with a magnetic attitude. No matter where Luffy goes he somehow comes out of it with at least one or two new people to consider friends. Luffy also states that sharing a meal with someone automatically makes them friends too. Even as a child, Luffy manages to enamour the Red-Haired pirates crew, where even Benn asks Shanks to take it easy on the kid because the kid had no-one else.
▶ SEEING OTHER PEOPLE CRY MAKES ME WANT TO CRY TOO.
▷ 3. Seeing people cry doesn't particularly upset Luffy or make him want to cry in return, instead it's something that galvanises him into action. The one time he's seen someone cry is when Nami begged him for help at Coco Village and, whilst heart wrenching, Luffy's response is more grim determination to make things right. He's going to help Nami, save the village and deal with Arlong. The only time Luffy is seen shedding his own tears in the show is as a child when saying goodbye to Shanks after making a promise. As empathetic as Luffy can be, the pirate captain isn't one for crying when his impulsivity allows him to go and deal with the problem head on instead and that extends to other people too.
▶ I OFTEN MAKE A BACKUP PLAN FOR A BACKUP PLAN.
▷ 5. What's a plan? Luffy barely even makes plans, let alone backups or backups for backups. He's going to just go right on in there and everything will work out, there's no room for hesitation or thinking too hard about it. In fact plans are for other people; Luffy doesn't even have a map to begin with and has to be told by Koby that he needs one. Once he even gets a map it's on Nami to navigate and ensure they're going in the right direction. Luffy can barely sit still long enough to truly plot something out and so it's mostly on his crew to handle that aspect of things.
▶ I USUALLY STAY CALM, EVEN WHEN UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE.
▷ 2. Luffy doesn't exactly stay calm, but he doesn't lose it either when things begin to crumble. It takes a lot first of all to even get him to realise things are going awry; when he's being tortured by Buggy for information on the map, Luffy is casual enough to ask about food. Being drowned in a tub of salt water? He's still going to somehow stand his ground despite it getting very close to him losing the battle. Only when things get really terrible does Luffy's casual demeanour slip, but instead of going into a hot rage with yelling and shouting, he instead settles for a determined grit to take the bad out. Kuro of the Black Cat pirates has everyone cornered and is skilled enough to be a real problem, but rather than freaking out Luffy uses his skills to deal with the problem for once, something that is rarely done by the pirate captain. There's very little that would have Luffy yelling and hollering in a negative manner, the only time it's seen is when Arlong talks about using Nami which in turn has Luffy retorting that Nami is her own person before he curbstomps the fishman and his park.
▶ I AM VERY SENTIMENTAL.
▷ 2. Luffy isn't outwardly sentimental, but there are a few things he holds near and dear to his heart. An example of this is the straw hat (which he'll have to regain back). It's a symbol of a promise made, something he'll return to Shanks once he's achieved what they set out to do. That means any endeavour to ruin said hat, to steal it or throw it away is met with a slight scolding. It's important to Luffy and he treats it as such, the same with his crew. Luffy never looks back on things in a negative light either, so the few things he does look back on are always with some kind of fondness.
▶ EVEN A SMALL MISTAKE CAN CAUSE ME TO DOUBT MY OVERALL ABILITIES AND KNOWLEDGE.
▷ 5. Luffy rarely doubts his abilities or knowledge, even to a fault. He's not the smartest pirate in the room, but that doesn't stop him from taking part or giving his own two cents even if they don't make sense. When Zoro is injured there is a slight moment where Luffy doubts himself, but it's a brief and fleeting thing before he snaps out of it to take on other things. That being said, Luffy seems to have an uncanny way of landing on his feet even when mistakes are made, so there's been little time for him to truly reflect and doubt things due to this.
▶ I AM MORE INCLINED TO FOLLOW MY HEAD THAN MY HEART.
▷ 4. Absolutely, in Luffy's case he will always follow his heart and his instinct rather than common sense. Which is for the best when Luffy doesn't have overly much in terms of intelligence or common sense. He'll act first, think later and always believe the best in something until severely proven otherwise. Nami openly stated she was using them for the map? Luffy sees and hears that and still doesn't believe it, opting to travel to Coco Village to figure out what's going on. Dreams and emotions are more Luffy's thing than hard numbers and strategy, and he's fine with that. Going to the Grand Line? Hell yes. How to get there? Ask Nami, he doesn't know.
▶ I AM PRONE TO WORRYING THAT THINGS WILL TAKE A TURN FOR THE WORSE.
▷ 5. Luffy doesn't worry over things that haven't happened, so fretting about something going wrong rarely ever enters his head. Captured? Well it's pirates, which is fine because he can deal with that. Forget the fact that pirates are vicious and potential murderers and all that jazz. Luffy knows that worrying over things will only serve to make the bad things happen, and he's happy to continue on without being anxious over things that have yet to pass. A hundred foot waves in the Grand Line? Sea Beasts and the likes? It's good fun, don't worry, they'll deal with that when they get there. Such is Luffy's way of thinking, though as to if that's a good or bad thing depends on who's asked.
▶ I ENJOY WATCHING PEOPLE ARGUE.
▷ 4. There's no joy in watching people argue, in fact when Zoro and Nami argue over something early on, Luffy is the first to intervene to try and sort it out. In his mind a crew needs to be solid, they need to have each others backs and there needs to be trust. Arguing won't help with that and he certainly won't be joining in if an argument breaks out, that is unless it's more of the bantering kind with Usopp over who the captain will be and who gets to design the Jolly Roger.
▶ I TEND TO AVOID DRAWING ATTENTION TO MYSELF.
▷ 5. Luffy doesn't avoid drawing attention to himself even when trying to sneak into a marine base. He just walks around, oblivious to the concept of stealth or keeping a low profile. In fact one of his dreams is to have his own bounty poster, complete with his picture on it, and a large number of Berry for his capture or killing. Luffy is loud, has no inside voice and doesn't even bother keeping his gum-gum abilities a secret either. Even when trying to be quiet for Nami to break into a safe, he's hovering around, sidling up close and generally just being a pest. The moment Luffy goes silent and isn't seen is the moment when something terrible has obviously happened.
▶ I OFTEN DO THINGS AT THE LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT.
▷ 4. Luffy being impulsive means he can't leave things hanging in the air for any given length of time. Things have to be dealt with asap, forget the planning and the likes, time to get it sorted. Going to the Grand Line? Brilliant, but no point waiting and saving to purchase a ship, it's time to go on a small boat and hope for the best. Luffy rarely hangs around on anything and is always the first to be diving into whatever it is, be it exploring or beating up a villain.
▶ I FIND IT EASY TO EMPATHIZE WITH A PERSON WHOSE EXPERIENCES ARE VERY DIFFERENT FROM MINE.
▷ 3. Somewhat. Luffy is able to empathise, but not to the fullest extent. He can listen and commiserate and give a good speech that actually works when someone needs it. But his own optimism can get in the way of such things and his intent to help and be positive can somethings be detrimental to understanding how bad something is. Also his loyalty can be a problem if he needs to empathise with someone outside of his crew; when Buggy talks about Shanks abandoning him, Luffy's kneejerk reaction is to deny it. He doesn't even consider it could be a thing, it's just an outright no. On the other hand, Luffy is able to empathise and connect with Kaya so much he almost talks her straight into gifting them a ship.
▶ I BECOME BORED OR LOSE INTEREST WHEN THE DISCUSSION GETS HIGHLY THEORETICAL.
▷ 1. Luffy can barely sit still, let alone follow along highly intense or theoretical discussions. He can join in for a little bit but will often be distracted by anything else, be it food or going off to sit on the figurehead of the ship. When Buggy is trying to determine what has a young man wanting to be king of the pirates, Luffy's response it to ask why there isn't any food. It's not that Luffy is an absolute idiot, he's just not willing to stay still for that long when he could be out there doing something, anything else than theorising.
▶ I RARELY FEEL INSECURE.
▷ 1. The pirate captain has a ridiculous high amount of confidence. Even as a child he was confident enough to stab himself in the face to get a scar and prove he'd be a good pirate to be hired. Luffy's confidence could move mountains and due to this there's zero room to feel insecure in his emotions or his abilities. There's an understanding that should he be like that, it could put his friends and others in danger by rendering him unable to take action. There's no way Luffy will let that happen and so his confidence and optimism render insecurity useless.
▶ I AM STILL BOTHERED BY MISTAKES I MADE A LONG TIME AGO.
▷ 4. Luffy has outright stated he never looks back and regrets. There is very little that bothers him, but there is one thing that will give him room for pause. Due to his actions as a child, Red-haired Shanks wound up losing his left arm in order to save the kid. Anyone would think that would mean Luffy would be less impulsive and prone to quick actions, but it hasn't and at most there's an occasional thought spared to Shanks' arm and nothing else. He should regret drinking poisoned soup and not being there to help his crew at the start, but Luffy doesn't even think back that far. There are multiple opportunities where he could look back and want to do better or feel bothered by making a mistake, but there's no need to in his mind. Learning can happen going forwards.
